8 years old. She has no father. She has 3 siblings and her mother works in district next to Kathmandu proper in Lalitpur as a carpet weaver.  Manu’s father abandoned the family and her family is extrememely poor.  The carpet factory is about to close with pressure from increased taxes under the new Maoist regime and very limited electricity.

Manu is a peaceful presence in the home.  Her regular smile is a comfort to everyone and seems to express her gratitude for being here.  She also loves to dance.
